How we evaluated and verified them

This is a documentary comparison, not a VPNVertex hands-on test. We reviewed and cross-checked each provider's published network, device-limit, feature, privacy, audit, plan, and refund information, then compared those statements with the cited independent assessments and benchmarks where available. For example, we distinguish a provider's description of its logging policy from an auditor's stated scope, and we note when a detailed report is not publicly accessible. We did not run original speed tests, test every streaming library, subscribe to either service, or inspect customer-only reports.

For each buying point, we checked whether the two providers' sources answered the same question and kept plan-, platform-, location-, currency-, and promotion-dependent terms conditional. We prioritize dated, attributable evidence over an isolated speed result or headline monthly price, and direct readers to verify checkout totals and renewal terms. Shared ownership does not make them the same service

Surfshark and Nord Security finalized a merger agreement in 2022. Surfshark's current company page says the businesses operate independently under one holding company. The original announcement also stated that their brands, infrastructure, management, employees, and product roadmaps would remain separate.

That relationship is worth knowing, but it does not make the subscriptions interchangeable. Device limits, apps, features, pricing, support accounts, and audit records remain distinct. Compare the products on their current terms rather than assuming that a shared corporate group produces identical privacy or performance outcomes.

Privacy and audits: NordVPN has the longer record

NordVPN's sixth assessment

NordVPN announced its sixth independent no-logs assurance assessment in February 2026. Deloitte Lithuania examined the service from November 10 through December 12, 2025, under the ISAE 3000 framework. The review covered server infrastructure, configurations, deployment processes, and several server types. NordVPN says Deloitte found the examined systems and supporting operations aligned with its no-logs statement.

This is point-in-time assurance, not a guarantee about every future configuration. The detailed report requires a Nord Account, so our assessment is limited to the public description. Surfshark's current evidence

Deloitte assessed Surfshark's no-logs controls in 2023 and 2025. The 2025 work examined standard, static, and multiport VPN servers, along with configurations, deployment processes, and supporting controls. Surfshark's Trust Center also lists infrastructure work by SecuRing in 2025 and Cure53 in 2026.

Both providers have meaningful third-party evidence. NordVPN wins this category because it has a longer recurring series of no-logs assessments, not because any assurance report eliminates all risk.

Devices and features: two different advantages

NordVPN supports up to 10 simultaneous device connections. Its distinguishing feature is Meshnet, which creates encrypted links between approved devices for private access, traffic routing, file sharing, and other peer-to-peer uses. Double VPN routes traffic through two VPN servers, while Threat Protection features vary by subscription and platform.

Surfshark's advantage is easier to explain: paid accounts allow unlimited simultaneous VPN connections. That can matter more than an extra feature when a household has many phones, computers, televisions, and travel devices. Surfshark also offers Dynamic MultiHop, CleanWeb, and optional security products in higher bundles. Its former SmartDNS feature is no longer supported as of February 2, 2026, so buyers with an unsupported smart TV should plan to use a compatible app, router, or VPN-protected hotspot instead.

Do not buy a larger bundle by default. Check which features are included in the exact tier shown at checkout and whether they work on your operating systems. Our Surfshark review separates the VPN service from the optional bundle products.

Speed and streaming: test your own route

NordLynx and WireGuard are both designed to avoid much of the overhead associated with older VPN protocols. That does not create a permanent speed winner. Results depend on the base connection, device, operating system, protocol, server distance, routing, and congestion at the time of the test.

We reviewed independent benchmark coverage as context but do not reproduce a single Mbps figure as if it applied to every user. VPNVertex has not completed a controlled, dated, repeatable NordVPN versus Surfshark lab test, so the honest conclusion is that both should be tested on the buyer's actual connection.

Streaming access can also change when a platform updates its detection systems. Neither provider can guarantee permanent access to every catalog. If a service matters, test the relevant region during the applicable refund period and follow that service's terms.

Price and renewal terms

Promotional prices move too often for a static article to name a permanent winner. Compare the same billing length and write down the total charged today, taxes, included products, renewal amount, and refund conditions. A low monthly equivalent can represent a large upfront payment.

Both providers advertise a 30-day money-back period for eligible initial purchases, subject to their current terms and purchase channel. Surfshark excludes some add-ons and recurring payments. NordVPN also applies eligibility conditions. Read the checkout and refund terms before paying.

Surfshark can offer better value when unlimited devices replace several subscriptions. NordVPN can offer better value when Meshnet, specialty servers, or a longer assurance history are features you would otherwise pay to obtain elsewhere. The cheaper checkout is not automatically the better purchase.

Choose NordVPN if

1. You want the longer recurring no-logs assurance record.
2. You need 10 or fewer simultaneous connections.
3. Meshnet, Double VPN, or specialty servers solve a real need.
4. You prefer NordVPN's current apps and the checkout terms fit your budget.

Choose Surfshark if

1. You need more than 10 simultaneous connections.
2. You want one account across a large household without counting devices.
3. Dynamic MultiHop or Surfshark's optional bundle is more useful to you.
4. Its current initial and renewal totals are the better match.
